Sleep Tea

Jiaogulan Tea - The Perfect Tea For A Better Sleep

A few weeks ago I wrote a piece on Green Tea explaining the caffeine levels and how your sleep might be affected. Having received a few emails from various people stating their disappointment at not being able to drink Green Tea in the late afternoon/early evening, I was on a mission to find an alternative.

You see most people who sleep badly ditch coffee and normal tea for the green stuff without realizing that Green Tea still contains caffeine, although that said Green Tea is extremely good for your body in a number of ways

Discovering The Tea of Immortality

To cut a long story short, I was browsing a quaint little market in Chiang Mai (Northern Thailand), when I came across a tea stall. I clapped eyes on a sign that said “the tea of immortality” – curios I proceeded to speak my limited Thai to the stall owner. He explained the wonders of Jiaogulan tea and the fact that it contained zero caffeine - making it ideal sleep tea.

Jiaogulan Tea

Jiaogulan is known for its ability to regulate blood pressure, lower cholesterol, build immunity, delay the aging process and prevent cells from becoming cancerous. Research studies in China have shown that Jiaogulan (Jiao Gu Lan) decreases cholesterol by improving the liver's ability to send sugar and carbohydrates to the muscles for conversion to energy instead of turning the sugar into triglycerides which the body stores as fat.

In short, this tea is amazing! At first I put way too much in and found it rather strong – second time around I went with a sprinkle and by my third cup I was feeling amazing without a hint of caffeine.

Where Does Jiaogulan Come From?

A herbaceous vine of the cucurbitaceae (cucumber or gourd family) indigenous to the southern parts of China, southern Korea and Japan, this tea is traditionally consumed by the people of Guizhou Province in China. People in Guizhou have a history of long life – thus the immortality tag.

The Perfect Sleep Tea

So here it is – the perfect tea for bad sleepers. No caffeine, high energy, combats aging caused by poor quality sleep, combats fat storage caused by poor quality sleep, and builds immunity against colds and viruses we pick up when we have a run of bad sleep. This is the ultimate sleep tea…have a Green in the morning if you must, but go Jiaogulan all day long!
